This is
eighties duo 'Voice Culture'. Tony Platt on bass and vocals and Paul
Wallworth on guitar. Tony and Paul carried on there musical
relationship after their earlier band 'Rare Seeds' (which also
contained two other local musicians, Yuseph Din on keyboard and Craig
Warburton on bass guitar.) had split, but it was in this band that
they both realised there was a musical chemistry between them.
Rehearsing at Tony's house in Seedley, their songwriting developed and
the song list began to grow steadily. The next step for the band was
to gig. So, armed with their trusty soundmaster drum machine they
mainly played a supporting role for bands such as 'Syncopation' at
prestige venues like The Gallery and Band on the wall. Paul tells us,"
It was difficult to recreate the sound we really wanted with the drum
machine, but looking back I think we did quite well". The first
demo tape was recorded in 1984 at Twilight Studio in Salford. The
songs 'find the Journey' and the classic 'There's no Castles Anymore'
were to be followed up a couple of months later with two new tracks
'Avalanche' and 'Summertime I cry'. The band were interviewed by local
newspaper 'Salford City Reporter' and asked about their ambitions, but
it was obvious to all who had listened to the demo, with their
commercial sound it could have been nothing less than the charts for
this band. Tony and Paul decided to send off there demo to record
companies and after a couple of rejections they received a positive
response from Fiction Records. Unfortunately Nothing became of the
interest and after a couple more gigs including 'The Regent' the band
split. Paul rejoined his old pal from 'Rare Seeds' Yuseph din
who had been writing songs and with the introduction of Anthony Mcvay
on bass 'Poppy Day' were formed. Paul has remained in local music
scene and after being in a string of bands throughout the nineties, he
once again collaborated with Yuseph on a new project. Tony, after a
couple of solo gigs virtually retired from the local music scene soon
after the split, although the lads did get back together briefly in
late eighties to record some new material accompanied by Local
musician Kevin Fenton on keyboard
