Urban Blitz - Steve Reid, Ross Drake (Loo Brush), Terry Parkins and Steve Marshall

THE HOTTEST sell out band in Salford” is the way the group Urban Blitz describe themselves.

Whether or not a four week residency at the Champion Hotel, Pendleton puts them in this category, it is hard to believe.

And with the chance of a first single on the way they have great hopes for the future.

With friends in high places, the Salford Jets, who will take their demo tape to EMI. Urban Blitz are hopeful of a contract in the near future.

They are a three piece group with of all people, Loo Brush on Bass, Terry Parkins on guitar and Steve Marshall on drums. Former member Steve Reid is now the manager.

Urban Blitz in their present line up have been together six months but all had played in other bands before this.

IMAGE

The lads all come from Pendleton Precinct area with Loo, he declined to give his real name, writing all the songs.

“The Skids and the Jam are our influences and we want to lose the image of a punk band.”

They are on at the Champion for another week and the move to the Bull’s Head in Walkden for a Thursday spot.

The Blitz say they are getting together a local following around the pubs but this is where they find themselves in a dilemma.

“We are stuck in the pubs and getting no further which isn’t helping our future.”

This is why the demo tape is so important to them; copies can be made and sent to record companies and radio stations.

TITLES

Some of the titles on the demo sound very interesting: “From the forthcoming Human Race,” “When the lights go out,” Why don’t you shut up for a minute” and “Made in Japan.”

This last title they assure me is nothing to do with the Deep Purple track of the same name.

When Urban Blitz are not entertaining their followers the rest of the time is spent rehearsing to produce a professional sounding live set, and they practice three times a week.

Anyone with good eyesight will have seen the publicity trail left by the group.

Posters suddenly sprung up round the precinct, on telephone boxes, notice boards and generally anywhere with a good vantage point.

POSTERS

This is all part of their campaign to get themselves noticed. Loo designed the posters and Terry had them copied.

One of their concerts which should be quickly forgotten was at the Russell Club recently.

Loo “I’m not an extrovert really” Brush explained. “We played the Russell with the Salford Jets and there were about 25 people present.”

The band can usually earn between £25 – 30 in a pub, for playing the Russell they earned absolutely nothing.

Urban Blitz have plenty of confidence in their own ability. If the tape reflects this confidence it will be worth waiting for.
