The Salford City Reporter/Advertiser has been one of
the major platforms for local unsigned musical talent for many years. From
'The Black Mountain Skiffle Group' in the late 1950's to the more recent
offerings of 'Hanky Park', The 'Reporter' has always been the perfect place
to kick start any ambitious young bands dreams. There was no dedicated spot
for unsigned bands until Trevor Baxter, a reporter with the paper introduced
a column called 'Pop Scene' on 21st May 1982. He wanted to develope
the local music scene and invited Salfords local bands to send him demo
tapes, gig dates and fanzines. He promised that everything that he received
would be looked at or listened to, and reviewed in a straight talking way
that "wouldn't need a university degree to understand". Trevor remained on
the column until 26th October 1984 when he left the paper. It was then taken
over by Graham Moore. 'Pop Scene' continued to play a major part in the
development of local bands in the Salford area during the early to mid
eighties until it faded away in about 1987. The Salford City
Reporter/Advertiser still continues to support local bands whenever it can.
During our research into the Salford local band scene, we've managed to
uncover most of the bands which were featured in the Salford City Reporter
from the fifties through to today, but we are interested to hear your story
whether you were featured in the paper or not. So start digging out those
photos and demo tapes and we'll let the world know about your time as a
Local band hero'.
