In the early eighties
bassist Mike Calderbank and Drummer Craig Rostock of local band SLR
were to join forces with Chadderton musicians James Carter and Pete
Hawksworth to form one of the most promising new bands to hit the
music scene in years, SYNCOPATION. Managed by John Barrett the lads
made a massive impact on the local and national music scene.
Supporting The Jam at the Apollo on two occasions and appearing on the
number one music show of the time 'The Tube', Syncopation seemed to
have the world at their feet. Their first 7'' single release was the
hauntingly brilliant 'Marking Time' with the self titled B-side
'Syncopation', released in 1982 on the Facsimile Liaison label. It
wasn't long before the record industries A+R men were offering the
band record deals. The Band were still holding out for 'the right
deal' when an offer from 'Bronze Records' seemed to be the one.
Unfortunately the record label went bust and the band were left with
no deal. Attempts to rekindle old contacts with A+R men and the record
companies proved fruitless. James decided that he couldn't continue
with the band having been 'so close'. Guitarist Mike Taylor had joined
the band just before the split and with the introduction of singer
Steve Ramsbottom, 'Scarlet Town' was formed. Syncopation achieved what
most young aspiring bands can only dream of, and as for their music? (check out the
