CONCERT DATE FOR NEW BAND
The Gallery in Peter
Street, Manchester, is an excellent venue for young bands looking to
establish themselves in the local scene. On November 14 it is the turn
of Fusion to try their luck. For this five piece Salford band it will
be their first big chance to make the grade. Like many of their
counterparts the band are confident of ‘making it’. Fusion, it
appears, are following a tried but so trusted road. A pot of gold or a
life of unfilled dreams awaits. They intend sending a demo tape to a
major record company—Chrysalis and Arista have been earmarked.
Fusion have produced one
tape at a local four track studio. Another is being recorded shortly.
They perform their own material (mostly) and are looking for a
manager. “We’ve got a couple of people in mind”. Says lead guitarist
Gavin Morris. The rest of Fusion are Dave Sloper (vocals), Jonathon
Carrasco (bass), Andrew Fenton (drums) and Gary Helsby (rhythm
guitar). The band has been together in some form or other for 18
months and they know each other through schooldays at Buile Hill High.
Should their success not
materialise by next summer they have a second plan of attack. Fusion
will launch themselves on the unsuspecting Spanish public. Jonathon
has family ties in Spain and hopes to arrange a number of gigs out in
the sun.
It’s impossible to say
what chance Fusion have of cracking into ‘the big time’. There are
bands with record deals who have less talent but who get a lucky
break.
Fusion will have to take
their place with the rest. But I think it would be a good idea for a
local independent record label to check out the Salford scene with its
multitude of talent.
It would be worth
recording a compilation album of the best city sounds.
