Born in ‘The Grosvenor’ on
Great Clowes Street in Broughton in 1984, Code of Arms were comprised
of Paul Swindells (vocals and guitar), Paul Glenn (bass) and John
Kilby (drums). All three members attended Broughton High School and
had family tree links with ‘The Phase’ and ‘The Latest’.
Code of Arms recorded
three demo tapes, including a couple at Twilight Studios on Alpha
Street, and there were vague stirrings of interest from Virgin
Records.
Kicking off their gigging
career at St. Boniface's Youth Club in ’84, the band reached its
zenith by coming third in a talent contest at ‘The Willows’ behind a
Neil Diamond impersonator and a twelve year old girl singer.
The band split in 1985.
Paul Swindells and John Kilby later became the nucleus of ‘Cleveland’.
