The Long March: Phidel Sonne

Two great Salford bands were on show at The Ruby Lounge this weekend so salfordmusic couldn't resist a mosey on down there to see what was going on.

First up were The Long March, a relatively new band with a great muscular sound and some proper Keith Moon haircuts. These lads have mastered the art of writing catchy hooks to go with their full-on guitar assault and are definitely a band to keep your eye on for the future.

There's good humour too:

"This one's about trainers" says singer/guitarist Phidel Sonne before launching into Two Stripe Blues, one of the highlights of the set. But the magnificent Tip the Tables is kept till last with its great hook:

"Who's gonna love you, if you don't love yourself, or anybody else?"

Paul "Edde" Edwards. Shanty Town.

There then followed a couple of bands from inferior parts of the planet so salfordmusic slipped out for a hotdog and a few glasses of Malibu and Coke at a nearby inn before returning to take in the spectacle that is Shanty Town.

It's been more than a year since we saw these lads in the small room at Moho Live and they've forged themselves a dedicated and sizable following since then. This shows in their confidence. They know that they can kick arse at will now. Edde, the two Adams and Si are able to amble onto the stage and instantly fly at full tilt into the old favourites like Fake Blond and A Day in the Life of Edward.

Adam Darby: Shanty Town.

It's all about crowd participation when Shanty Town are on form. From the first chord of the first song to the last cymbal crash of the last- the crowd are crushed up at the front, with the dedicated sing-alongers and dancers a bit further back. A large part of the crowd tonight are wearing comedy glasses; can't think why.

It's about time someone signed these lads up. Their studio recordings will never match the intensity and energy of their live shows, but they're getting closer nowadays. Have a little nosey at their myspace page and you'll see what I mean.
